GoPro Memory Card: Which one Should I get?

Searching for the Best GoPro Memory Card or just want to make sure you have a compatible card?

If so, you’re in the right place.

This is one of the most frequently asked questions about the GoPro Hero camera and it’s also one of the most important questions.

If you don’t have the right memory card, your GoPro camera may not perform properly and could even fail to capture and save your footage.

If you want to avoid a complete disaster like this, you’ll want to purchase a memory card that meets the requirements of your GoPro.

The SanDisk Extreme MicroSD Memory Card is our TOP CHOICE for the ultimate blend of performance, reliability and value.

  • Data Transfer Speed: 160MB/s
  • UHS Speed Class 3
  • Hardware Interface: SDXC

It even comes with an adapter to fit into standard SD Memory Card slots for easy downloading to your laptop or you can opt for the optional USB Card Reader if your computer isn’t equipped with an SD slot.

This is one instance where you definitely want to go with a reputable name brand like SanDisk.

It’s also a card that is recommended directly from GoPro so you know you can trust it.

It’s available in a range of capacities including 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, 400GB, 512GB and even 1TB!

This card is compatible with the following cameras:

  • HERO8 Black
  • Max
  • HER7 Cameras (Black, Silver, White)
  • 2018 HERO
  • HERO6 Black
  • HERO5 Black
  • Fusion
  • HERO4 Black + Silver
  • HERO4 Session + HERO Session

Keep in mind that some GoPros have memory card size limits. Be sure to check the table at the bottom of this post!

Ultimate Performance GoPro Memory Card

If you want the absolute best and don’t mind paying a slight premium, we’re sticking with the SanDisk brand but going up to the Extreme Pro MicroSD model.

The difference is in the “Pro” designation which gives you slightly quicker transfer speeds of 170MB/s (up from 160MB/s in the SanDisk Extreme).

  • Data Transfer Speed: 170MB/s
  • UHS Speed Class 3
  • Hardware Interface: SDXC

It is also compatible with all the Hero cameras listed above for the Extreme memory card.

Why it Matters

GoPro cameras are capable of recording at very high resolutions and high frame rates which means a lot of data is being recorded and saved to the memory card.

Some of the more extreme examples would be 4K at 60fps or 1080p at 240fps.

Think about it.

240 frames are being recorded EVERY SECOND.

So it’s not surprise that the memory card needs to be able to handle this transfer of data.

Do I need a Memory Card?

Simply put: YES!

GoPro cameras do not have any built-in memory so you need a removable memory card.

MicroSD vs SD Card?

Note that MicroSD and SD cards are different!

For all GoPro cameras starting with the Hero 3, they all use a MicroSD card (the physically smaller one).

If you have an original Hero HD or Hero 2, these require the larger SD card.

HOW TO Format YOUR GoPro SD Card

Formatting a memory card essentially prepares it for use in a device.

It is recommended to format the card while in the GoPro and not on the computer.

It’s always a good idea to format your memory card every now and then let’s say after you save all of your footage.

It’s especially important to format your card if you’re transferring your card from another device to your GoPro.

WARNING: Formatting your GoPro’s Memory Card deletes all of your footage so keep that in mind. Save your files before you do this.

The Fine Print

There are a few exceptions when it comes to memory cards. Check out the list below.

  • The 2014 HERO camera only supports up to 32GB of capacity so don’t exceed this
  • Hero3 Black, Hero3+, Hero+ and Hero+ LCD support up to 64GB of capacity
  • Hero4 and Hero Session cameras support up to 128GB
