My guess would be after the January 2014 Consumer Electronics Show. And a prediction that they will release a "bare" version (camera only) that will fit the cases and such that H3 users already own.

Competition may cause a rush to market the product, but I am going to be one who won't rush right in to purchase one, as I certainly want to see what the bugs and complaints end up being for any new products from GoPro. I am still a bit burned at the lack of a stock housing with openings included for cables and an external mic not being immediately available on the H3 cameras. I just don't see the cost of the camera or accessories being a great selling point for GoPro for the average person's needs. For the pro that may be a different story, but the numbers of typical non-pro users far outweigh them in total sales, I suspect. Me, I'd suspect a lot of folk will be in the "wait and see" column before rushing out to purchase the newest trendy GoPro on the market. That can hurt them and certainly should if they don't improve their customer service and product reliability. With that in mind by the company itself, I am guessing that they may hold off any early attempt to market the H4 and bring it in out in a somewhat surprising move, a while after Christmas. Once you get a bad rep on a product line or service, it is difficult to overcome it immediately. I am guessing that all of that sort of thinking goes into making the ultimate decision as to when to bring on the new camera.
    Well said...

It would be very interesting to know what percentage of H3 owners are new to GoPro and how many upgraded from earlier versions. I suspect that most are new owners and that has an impact on the H4 launch, because nearly none of the new H4 owners would be very aware of the H3 problems. My H3 was a holiday gift and I guarantee my wife was then, and would be even now, unaware of the issues. It would be unusual for the mainstream new H4 owner to do any meaningful research and be very conversant with the H3 problems. That being said, no way are they gonna miss the 2013 holiday season. They have spent too much marketing $$ (didja see X-Games?) to miss the opportunity. Not many H3 owners would probably upgrade anyway as most do not utilize the camera's more sophisticated options anyway and would not really need the upgrade.

Hero 4 has been discussed since the Hero 3 got released. Don't worry about it. The H3 is so good anyway. I'll probably use the H4 release to get a cheaper H3BE unless the H4 is super special. I don't know what they can do to make it take better video, especially now that the firmware is 99.9% stable now. If you constantly wait around for the release of the next product, you'll miss out on capturing great moments

It's not that it's going to be better video, if the rumors are true then the frame rate of each resolution will pretty much double (720p @ 240fps, 1080p @ 120fps, etc). And I'm almost certain 4k will be able to record in a smooth 30fps.
