Wink GoPro App On Your Computer? Sure, Why Not?

Just had an idea and decided to give it a try. And whaddya know? It worked! I'm able to use the GoPro App on my Windows 8 laptop! Wanna know how?

    1. Download BlueStacks:
Run Mobile Apps on Windows PC or Mac with BlueStacks | Android App Player

    2. Download the Android version of the GoPro App:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15557216/com.gopro.smarty.apk

    3. Double click the APK (should now be associated with BlueStacks), and it will install automatically

    4. Turn on your GoPro's Wifi

    5. Switch your laptop's Wifi to connect to the GoPro

    6. Start BlueStacks and launch the GoPro App!

With mine, I can't see the preview yet. It does say "Starting Preview", but nothing happens. I can still mess with all the settings, start and stop recording, and turn the GoPro on and off as easily as on a phone/tablet, though. Future updates will probably improve compatibility to the point that will eventually work, hopefully.

Wow! That's pretty awesome! Thanks for posting that up.

Now if we can figure out how to get the preview function to work..

BlueStacks emulates Android, so it's kind of a 50/50 shot it'll work in future revisions of the app and BlueStacks. There are ways to fake Android devices on other Android devices, but not sure if that would work with BlueStacks.

The thing I'm most interested in is trying to run multiple instances of BlueStacks. If I can do that, and use a second Wifi adapter, I can view both of my GP3 Blacks simultaneously as I shoot 3D!

Not sure what people's problems are with Win8. Runs the same as Win7, only faster.

Hmmm, only difference I see is the Start Menu (now a well-organized screen) and shutting down (flail around a bit and you'll find it ). 99.9% of everything else looks and acts the same as in Win7. You don't have to use Apps if you don't want to, pretty much negating the rest of the complaints people have had about Win8.

I am having the same issue with bluestacks (no preview).

The best workaround I have found so far is to use VLC media player (a free player you can download HERE) as a preview window.
Just run vlc and go to Media-->Open network stream and enter "http://10.5.5.9:8080/live/amba.m3u8" under network URL. This will make VLC livestream your gopro. So you can use the gopro app in bluestacks to control the camera and vlc for the preview.

A second option is an application for PC called "wigo" that can be found HERE but it didn't work well for me (kept losing the connection to the camera) and it uses VLC as well for the preview so I prefer the first method.

Yet I am really looking forward to a real solution to this problem. I have read some posts (from people using the gopro app in smartphones) about solving this problem with the updated gopro app which aparently has a Selectable software decoder setting on the top right of the app but i just cant locate this in bluestacks. If I find something new I will post it here!
