Yes manual update means put the files on the sdcard and then hard reset , the GoPro will take the files and install the new firmware. After that remove files from the SD card. This solved all my freeze problem on mine.

Along with 1,000s of others, got a Hero3 Black for Xmas. After several attempts, got the update done (the iPhone app worked so assume the update worked). Took a few movies and uploaded them to the computer with no problem, then tried to connect the Hero3 to the TV with the micro-HDMI cable. Got as far as the playback symbol on the camera menu and then it just stayed there, with no signal on the TV. Camera was unresponsive to any buttons so reinstalled the battery. Now only get a red light on the back. I've tried leaving it charging - no luck. I've tried hard reset as post #238 - no luck. I've copied the manual update files to the MicroSD card using my laptop and tried hard reset again - no luck. If I pull the battery and reinsert it, all lights are out; but if I try to turn it on, charge it or hard reset it the red light comes on. I've got a major bike ride planned for a couple of weeks time and don't want to send it back. Any other thoughts?
I get this a lot too. Best luck I've had when stuck like that is to try a hard reset. If that doesn't work, then fiddle around(this is my main problem with this thing...nothing seems to work every time. There's no pattern.) with:
1) when stuck in this mode, the wifi button will still work. i've had luck bringing it back from the dead by cold booting it, then hit the wifi button before doing anything else. this will turn wifi on(even tho nothing else is working). You can then connect to it via the app and power it on and off. This seems to wake it up and bring it out of the "dead" loop.
2) you can also try cold booting it(battery out), put the battery back in, then before pressing anything, plug it into the computer via usb. it usually recognizes this(even tho it's not recognizing outlet power). Once you mount it as a drive on the pc, i generally have luck being able to turn the device on. once it's on, then it begins behaving normally again. you can turn it off and the front led will come on(charging) as normal. At that point I can usually disconnect it from the pc and it's good to go(outlet charging and other normal functions work).
Again, I've been messing with this thing for 2 weeks and I haven't been able to nail down any pattern to its behavior.

Thanks for the suggestions barneco but none of those are working either. Wifi won't come on and plugging the USB lead in just puts the red light on again. Still basically an expensive ornament with a red light. Got through to GoPro support just long enough to try a hard reset with them on the line and they were surprised when it didn't work. Then I got cut off and couldn't go through another 50 minute wait to connect again. Will try them again a bit earlier tomorrow.
I put my new micro SD card in an adapter and put that in my old gopro and formatted it, then put it into the black and manually updated and it finally ****ing worked.

I've experienced the freezing issue on a Hero 3 Silver, I also had a problem following the automated update process whereby the live preview function would not work.
I don't yet know if the freezing problem is solved, but the process below has resulted in the live preview functioning on my iPad.
1. Format the card using erase all on the camera
2. Download the update. Go to www.gopro.com/productupdates and follow the steps without connecting your camera. You'll be prompted to enter your serial number which is on a sticker on the inside of the battery compartment.
3. Once the update is downloaded to your computer, connect the camera via USB and using Windows Explorer or Finder on a Mac, unzip the downloaded update file and copy the extracted files into the root (i.e. not in DCIEM or Misc folders) of the camera's memory card.
4. Eject/Disconnect the camera from the computer, then power it on. The update should take about five minutes and in my case required I think three restarts. The whole process is automated.
5. Once the update completes, plug the camera into your computer via USB then turn it on. Delete the update files you copied earlier. Leave only the system generated folders on the card (DCIEM and MISC, possibly one other).
6. Eject/Disconnect the camera
7. Power up and you should be set to go.

I took the camera canyoning yesterday and had no issues, so it would appear that this process has resolved the freezing problem at least in my case.
I have the exact same issue when using the Battery BacPac. GoPro is sending me a replacement Battery Bacpac, but I seriously doubt that is the cause.Quote:

Good Evening - sad to say that I had to seek this type of forum out. Just purchased the Go PRo Hero 3 for my hubby for x-mas. The very first thing that I had to "google" related to this nifty little camera was "is there a reset for GoPro Hero 3 black edition". just charging the darn thing - it Froze - froze solid - did not respond to ANY button pressing. We have had exactly 2 videos )short less than 30 seconds and some still photos) and every time we hook it up to charge - it freezes. Have to remove battery for awhile and then attempt to power up. Not very settling. We are SCUBA divers and you can not exactly take a battery out underwater and try again. I have until the 24th of January to return to Best buy and I seriously hope GoPro is monitoring these forums and will make a fix because I am not happy that the present I bought my husband has turned into a headache for him - when all he wants to do is relax and be in the outdoors with no stress. Right now this camera is causing stress - brand spanking new and he had to fight with it to get it working correctly. Side note: I bought the top of the line SD card - the recommended card for the camera at best buy & we are charging through the computer as indicated on the manual.
